Description
The American Civil War's Battle of Antietam was also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, particularly in the South. It was fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland and Antietam Creek as part of the Maryland Campaign, and was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Union soil. It is the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with a combined tally of 22,717 dead, wounded, or missing.
The Observation Tower at Antietam was constructed in 1897 in order to provide a commanding view of the battlefield for commemorative and educational purposes. The preserved landscapes were meant to honor the dead and serve as open-air classrooms for military study.
My thanks to Wikipedia for the above information.
I have personally visited Antietam several times over the years, and each time I have been deeply moved ... even on a clear and sunny September day.
