Description
When I was a little girl, I had no idea that these guys were anything but a fun natural toy. We'd bend the stems into a loop and feed the seed head through the loop. Nip the loop together tight and pull the stem with the seed head back through the loop fast ... if done correctly, it made an excellent missile. Sort of like a spit ball .. without the ball. Or the spit.
Now that I'm older and wiser, I know these are nasty weeds and that they will wreck havoc in my husband's beautifully manicured green, grassy lawn. And I am further aware that shooting these things at my enemies is frowned upon. Even without the spit.
Image taken at the edge of a pond in Montgomery County Maryland ... the amazing golden color was actually the color of the water itself. The place was teeming with dragon flies, turtles, fish, herons, canada geese and mallards. I decided to focus on the weeds.
Snapped with the Nikon D300 and the 70-300mm vr Nikon / Nikkor lens. A bit of editing in Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop CS5, and my thanks to Belle Fleur for the great texture.
