Description
Though we've had a rough winter here in the DC area this year (winter of 2014 - 2015), we forget that in previous years we've had snow on the ground as late as the month of April. This image was actually taken during the height of the Cherry Blossom Festival in March of 2011. We had had snow during the night and had hurried down to catch some images of the snow on the cherry blossoms, very early in the morning. Though the snow in DC itself was sadly limited to a flake here and there (... get it? flakes in DC? ... excuse me, a little political humor ... ) the sight of the blossoms at dawn, with only myself, my husband, my dog and a few other hearty souls, was breathtaking.
Admittedly I've enhanced an originally gray and featureless image so that it corresponded to my memories of the morning and of what I'd hoped it would be. The hints of snow were added, as was the painterly effect, in Photoshop.
Original photographic image captured with the Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikkor lens.

Wonderful shot Lois and I love the treatment! Amazing that you captured it without the hundred million people that surround it constantly! Congrats on being featured on the Gallery Wall.
Lois Bryan replied:
Hi Ginger, thank you so much!! It was very early morning, middle of the week. It had snowed the night before (the reason we went down, to see snow on the cherry blossoms!) so for the first hour or so I had the place pretty much to myself. The lighting was tricky, but it was a beautiful sight!!
