Description
Depending on where you're standing, time spent in the mountains can be short on sunshine or long. In the case of Harper's Ferry's High Street, the main road that intersects with Shenandoah Street there at the bottom of the hill, the steep incline on which the town was built creates sharp contrasts in light and shadow as the sun begins to set.
On this particular day in early September of 2010, the sunshine was strong and the warm colors of the old town were rich in the light. In the hills beyond, the colors of autumn are just beginning to make their appearance.
I've always had a fascination with small towns, especially the different architectures living happily side by side as the years rumble on. They seem to have formed close friendships as they hold each other up, though this can result in serious fire hazards. Little more than a month ago in late July (2015) a fire devastated several of the buildings to the left. Fortunately no one was hurt, and rebuilding efforts are already underway.
Original photograph taken with the Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikkor lens. After some tweaks in Photoshop CS6 and hdr / tonemapping in Photomatix, I digitally hand painted the entire image in Corel Painter 2015. My thanks to Karen Burns for the hint of texture.

Very cool ... yes, it's a glorious area. Make sure you come back in the autumn ... usually about the 3rd week in October or so. You won't be sorry!!!!

Your work is very interesting. I am not sure if it is a painting that is modified by computer, or a photograph that is modified. Either way, It is delightful. L/V
Lois Bryan replied:
Margaret, thank you very much ... honored that you enjoyed it. I always describe what my images actually are in the "medium" box, to the right of the comments section. In this case, it says "photograph - photography / digital art / photography based digital painting" ... I hope that helps explain the process ... a very simplified explanation, though, of course!! ; ))

I was just on this street a few nights ago. It is so realistic, I actually thought it was a photograph at first! Beautiful!
