Description
The charm of a copper tea kettle gleaming in a stolen shaft of sunlight and sitting on a wood stove brings back many memories. Back in the day, cooking was done on top of wood stoves. Wood was shoved into lower compartments and the fire and heat rising, as it does, would heat the water for tea. Or the veges and gravies for the stew. I can confirm this as my grandmother's stove was just such a one and I remember it well. There were ovens on these things as well ... and how the ladies of old ever got cakes baked has been a mystery to me all my life.
I have memories of the seasons, winter and how the stove kept the house cozy ... and summers, when the stove was pretty much kept unlit as much as possible!!
There were also smaller stoves, such as the one pictured here, with only one or two burners and no oven compartment. My uncle, who lived on the farm with my grandmother had one like this in his "shack." This is where he'd boil the water for his coffee pot.
Lots of memories!!
The pictured image is actually taken from one of the homes at Old Bedford Village in Bedford, PA ... one of my favorite spots for photography. The location is actually a compilation of homes, stores, schools and barns rescued and reclaimed from the surrounding area, fixed up, and put into a town environment for all to enjoy. A great step back in time that I heartily recommend, if you're ever in the area.
Fine art purchases of this image will not include a watermark, and if I may make a recommendation ... this image will look its very best on the fine art paper choice of "picture rag."
