"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." Thomas Jefferson.
My family took me to Gettysburg many times when I was a little girl. Usually several other families in our neighborhood would all pack up picnic baskets and we'd make a day of it. I have very fond memories of climbing all over the rocks and gullies here. But even though I may have been playing, Gettysburg always haunted me. When I visited recently, camera in hand, it was important to me to try and create something a little out of the ordinary ... for those who fought at Gettysburg ... and for all our soldiers ... now and throughout our nation's history.
The addition of the eagle may be gilding the lily, but it seemed to fit with Thomas Jefferson's wonderful quote, so in he went.
This image is a compilation of three of my own images plus several textures from Skeletal Mess at Flickr. The Canon and background were taken at Gettysburg , the eagle was captured at the Conowingo Dam, and a layer of the clouds that you see was taken in Howard County, Maryland.
The eagle and the cannon images were taken with the Nikon D300, the sky with the Nikon D40x. All were combined and tinkered with in Photoshop CS4, with further tinkering in Corel Painter 11 and Nikon's Capture NX2.
NOTE: FINE ART AMERICA WATERMARK WILL NOT APPEAR ON PURCHASED IMAGE.

I thought I'd commented on this one before. It is an emotional piece with the theme highlighted by those beautiful ominous clouds. Congrats.

This is stunning and very moving, Lois! I've read so much about the Civil War in the last few years, have two friends who are great Civil War buffs. Thank you for this amazing work. Fave
