Oh, lucky you! Pompeii is a lifelong fascination of mine, too! I can't even count the number of books I've read, documentaries I've devoured, and (usually not-so-great) Hollywood films I've watched on the subject. Lois, sometimes you really do seem like my sister from another mother! :-) Your 'Main Street, Pompeii' is beautiful, dark, sorrowful, and too-silent. All things I've felt about Pompeii. I'll admit to being jealous of your visit to one of my bucket list destinations. Thanks for sharing your story, and such beautiful art!

Lois Bryan replied:

Dearest Wendy ... thank you so so much for "getting" what I was feeling when I put this thing together. I have another version with a gorgeous blue sky of course ... no surprise, I'm sure, knowing me ... but the more I fiddled around with this thing, the more I was "feeling" ... and there weren't any blue skies in that particular head-space. I know you know what I'm talking about. Thank you for understanding!!! If you have to hitch a ride on a slow boat to Naples, do NOT deny yourself the trip to Pompeii and Herculaneum. We were on a cruise specifically targeting ancient areas in the Mediterranean. Let me tell you ... I was like a little kid on Christmas morning. I don't know why they didn't toss me off the boat. You MUST go. Don't wait. Go NOW!!!!!

A most fascinating and telling master digital / photo artwork. It speak of the power of nature and also how easily a whole city and its history can be totally forgotten. :-)

Shooting b&w 120 roll film in a borrowed old 1940s Kodak bellows camera at age 13 in Pompei on a school trip got me hooked on Photography for life! This is great and makes me want to revisit the place again!

Lois Bryan replied:

Lois Bryan replied:

Liesl, thank you and glad you enjoyed my interpretation!!!!! I hope you get a chance to visit there some day ... also, remember there's another city that was covered at the same time, Herculaneum ... which not far away and is also available for visits. Both ... just so amazing!!!!

I got an earie feeling looking at this artistic image. It gave me a feeling of being there! Awesome, maybe I was in another life! l/f

Lois Bryan replied:

Dee that's awesome. It's an eerie place. I don't care how blue the sky is, how warm the sun, how many tourists surround you (and there were zillions of other people all around) ... there is a feeling that is impossible to describe. I can't believe my eyes didn't pop right out of my little head that day.

Artist's Description

I was still a kid the first time I heard about Pompeii. I was completely astounded. Completely. To think of a volcano covering an entire city ... and its inhabitants .... that it was lost for thousands of years ... blew my mind. I read everything I could lay my hands on about it, and back then, it wasn't really a whole lot. I did find a copy of "The Last Days Of Pompeii" by Edward George Earle Bulwer-Lytton (it's still around here someplace, I'm sure). My parents taste in reading material was awesome, and I still thank them!! I devoured the book. The story of the doomed city lived in my mind, night and day, all my life. (A few years ago I picked up "Pompeii" by Robert Harris. Not bad, either. I highly recommend both.)

I made up my mind, I was going to be an archaeologist and make my way to Naples. Nothing could stop me. Well, of course, life did. It has that habit. But much later, I did have the opportunity to visit Pompeii. The image you see here is not as I s...

About Lois Bryan

Lois Bryan

Welcome! I"m a photographer and digital artist living in the Mid-Atlantic area of the US. Drawing and creating my own little sketchy worlds are some of my earliest memories. Life did what it does and the art fell away, but I reconnected when digital photography was introduced. I enjoy adding to my love of photography by tinkering with computer art programs including Photoshop, Corel Painter, Rebelle and others , though I do not use Ai / Artificial Intelligence. I also love working completely freehand with no photo reference involved. All of which is allowing me to circle back to a semblance of my days of sketching and painting traditionally. Please be aware that we are currently experiencing a glitch in our system. The images in...
