Description
Washington DC's Cherry Blossom Festival is an event that locals and tourists from all over the world look forward to and enjoy every year. The lead up and anticipation has the local news casters tripping over themselves to monitor and discuss every detail. But maybe not so much this year, 2017. Mid-March temperatures in the 20s have, according to the experts, effectively killed the buds that were due to burst forth within the next week or so. An historic event.
So I returned to a dawn from a few years ago, 2011, when the blossoms were magnificent. The rising sun, burning off the gentle mists and a light, overnight snow cast a warmth over the rippling waters in the tidal basin that reflected the peaches and pinks, setting the Jefferson Memorial aglow.

Springtime Tallahassee never has blooming flowers either, despite being in Florida. They are either frozen (without snow) with the last dregs of winter or the first rains knock them all off. Featured on WHAT Interrobang. LF
Lois Bryan replied:
It's always touch and go, every year ... but when they come out right, as they did in the year, here, they are magical!!!

Truly gorgeous! I've never been to DC, this would a wonderful time to visit! l/f
Lois Bryan replied:
Dee, it is. But if you come, don't try this year ... looks like the bulk of the blossoms will be nipped by the extreme cold we're experiencing. Also ... you'll have to get up very early in the morning, as we id on this day, otherwise ... the crowds are bun-bumper!!!! ; ))
Angela Davies
Stunning scene and treatment, LF Nice to see because with the cold and snow may not happen this year! :(
Lois Bryan replied:
Thank you, Angie, yes, that's what I was thinking and why I decided to play with this one!! Fingers crossed that some of the other species that bloom later will still be okay.
