Description
A summer vacation at the Outer Banks of North Carolina several years ago included a visit north of Whalehead and Corolla to a wilder, more remote area beyond gates and fences where no roads existed and you'd better time your thick-tread-tired 4-wheeler to time and tides. The broad open expanse of beach and sea was spellbinding.
But ... we weren't alone.
We discovered a small herd of the beautiful wild Spanish mustangs that once roamed the outer banks from north to south. In all the years we visited there, we'd seen them many times, but by this trip, which I think was our last or nearly so, they had been herded to this more remote section ... for their own protection. Wild yes, but semi-domesticated ... they would wander down the roads and ... like the wild deer elsewhere ... were getting hit by cars. So, for their own protection and the protection of the summer tourists (like ourselves) they were relocated.
Seeing them again was pure joy. This particular big guy was quite aloof from the rest of his little family group, preferring to stand atop a sandy dune and munch the sparse sea oats as the morning sun tried to burn through the haze. Beyond him, where the horizon invisibly blends ocean and sky ... morning was breaking.

Beautiful Outer Banks beach scene with great colors, light and shadows, perspective and composition, Lois! It's amazing to see wild horses running free on the beach, existing with minimal help from people. F/L

Love the setting and texture of your wild horse pictures Lois. Trips like yours on the outer banks can be challenging and demanding. I am preparing to make a similar trip to the Anza-Borrego desert region of SE California where I have stored my motor home at Leap n Lizard Ranch for winter and spring nature excursions.
