On a brilliant sunny summer morning, a scene of magnificent color and light envelopes the peaceful landscape around the infamous but beautiful Mount Vesuvius, near Naples, Italy.
But don't let its beauty deceive you. This sweet gentle-looking mountain is the cause of the catastrophic doom of the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum and others when Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. It has erupted many times since, and is the only volcano on Europe's mainland to have blown in the last hundred years. As 3,000,000 people live near enough to be affected by an eruption, with at least 600,000 in the danger zone, it's regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.
For an incredible look at what that long ago August day may have looked like, I encourage you to copy and paste the following YouTube link:
Fortunately the day I was there in 2005, it was nothing but clear blue skies, sunshine and pretty flowers.
I used one of my own original photos to loosely sketch the image, then digitally painted it, freehand in a very loose impressionistic style, in Corel Painter.
Not created using Artificial Intelligence / AI.
Fine art purchases of this image as well as products will not include a watermark, and if I may make a recommendation ... this image will look its very best on the fine art paper choice of "picture rag."
