Happy to announce that "Checkers" tied for second / came in third in the Fine Art America contest POP UP 25 CARDS CASINOS AND GAMBLING contest held by Fine Art America Based Masters Advocacy group September 23, 2019. Many thanks to the contest administrator, Debora Lewis and to everyone who voted for my image. Congratulations to the other winners!

Strolling through Old Bedford Village's shops and houses on a cool autumn afternoon a few years back, I found myself standing inside the old general store. To my left was an old cast iron stove, glowing with warmth, and before me was this very wonderful checkers set. To my untrained eyes, the pieces looked handmade, which made them even more beautiful to me. Of course my imagination went off immediately, imagining the souls who had spent lazy summer afternoons and cold winter's nights gathered around the board ... wondering who its champions were ... and how much fun they had back in the day.

I guess that's the thing I like best about antiques and vintage pieces ... the unspoken, unseen ... but surely felt ... stories they tell if we only take the time to listen.

Image sketched and painted by hand, digitally, and very loosely based on one of my own photos using Corel Painter 2015, a Wacom tablet, the art pen stylus and a wide variety of beautiful digital brushes.

Fine art purchases of this image will not include a watermark, and if I may make a recommendation ... it will look its very best on the fine art paper choice of "picture rag."
