On September 10th, 2017, "Colorful Reflections" tied for 2nd place (came in 3rd?) in the Fine Art America "Nautical themed group logo contest" held by the "Ship To Shore And All Things More" group. Congratulations to the other winners!! My sincere thanks to the group host, Dawn Kori Snyder, and to everyone who voted for my son's beautiful image!!
A grouping of hard working fishing boats spending a quiet few moments moored off the Tobermory Isle of Mull in Argyll, Scotland. Their very ship-shape and beautifully shiny hulls and colors reflect perfectly in the clear blue waters.
Image taken by my son, Rich Bryan, while living in Edinburgh, Scotland, April, 2012. Limited editing by myself.
Welcome! I"m a photographer and digital artist living in the Mid-Atlantic area of the US. Drawing and creating my own little sketchy worlds are some of my earliest memories. Life did what it does and the art fell away, but I reconnected when digital photography was introduced. I enjoy adding to my love of photography by tinkering with computer art programs including Photoshop, Corel Painter, Rebelle and others , though I do not use Ai / Artificial Intelligence. I also love working completely freehand with no photo reference involved. All of which is allowing me to circle back to a semblance of my days of sketching and painting traditionally. Please be aware that we are currently experiencing a glitch in our system. The images in...

What's that saying? --- "An apple doesn't fall far from the tree" -- well your son has inherited all your great photographic talent and instincts. Great shot! Don't think I've ever seen anything as tack sharp as this one.

I know there was some editing but still you can't get this kind of sharpness and color without a quality sensor and lens even though this camera is not new with only 6 mp. My Pentax sensor is not quite up to Nikon quality. Only until the K-5 did Pentax compete with the big boys after it's fall from marketing grace years ago. I see the difference and have wanted an upgrade for this reason. This quality of this image is proof I need the K-5 and some new lenses. Don't get rid of your camera yet! I understand why your son has kept your camera!
Lois Bryan replied:
Suzanne, thank you again. The journey with cameras and lenses continues ... it'll never end!! I've upgraded from the D40x over the years and am now shooting with the Nikon D750 (love it) and have treated myself to a couple of Nikkor's lovely top of the line full sensor lenses to go with (but now I digitally paint over practically everything, lol). But it's still a matter of the basics ... holding the daggone thing really steady and paying attention to the light being numbers 1 and 2, lol!!!!
Suzanne Powers
I just read the description, maybe your son has this camera?
Lois Bryan replied:
Suzanne, thanks so much!!! He was using my old Nikon D40x with the 18-135mm lens. Nothing out of the ordinary ... and yes, he still has my camera, lol!!!! I did do a bit of tweaking in Photoshop, I admit!! ; ))
Suzanne Powers
Wow, Wow, Wow! Gorgeous image and work Lois. Are you using a full frame DSLR? That is one nice lens!

Fantastic photo. I love any kind of working boat. These are beautiful but do seem well maintained. Your son has a good eye.

I'm always lurking for this shot, the water and light just fantastic, this is something someone will look at a long time from now. The fishing boats, so well constructed and the always unfinished look sitting in that water perfectly..
Greg Hayhoe
Love this shot... well done Lois... just stunning detail and colour... Bravo. l/c/f
Lois Bryan replied:
Thank you so much, Greg!! I can't take full credit for this beauty ... it was captured by my son when he was living in Scotland a few years ago. I just did a few tweaky edits. So glad you enjoyed it!!

It's plain to see that the apple didn't fall far from this tree! Your son has an amazing talent for photography, just like his Mom. Great composition, detail and color. Great work Rich!
