Lois you must have the patience of Job, or be able to become invisible at will. My experience with taking quality images of butterflies, (like yours), is that it very difficult to do. You have some of the best images I've seen anywhere.

Lois Bryan replied:

Hey Joe, thank you!! Actually, this particular image is a composite .. but ... I do have a few bits of advice about butterflies. First of all, pick your day and time of day. They love the heat, but I don't, lol ... so early evening or late mornings are usually good. Also, I frequently shoot butterflies with my 70-300mm Nikkor instead of the 105mm macro. Reason, of course, I can get closer without getting too close. And you have to be patient. Just stand there. These little guys flit from one flower to another ... but they frequently flit back. Once they're used to you being in the flower garden with them, they're fine. Some years are better than others. I've often had to actually brush them aside as I've walked down the path. And plant the flowers they love. I've had great luck with what are called Echinacea or cone flowers. Come to think of it, I captured this particular little guy at an actual butterfly exhibit, and not in my own garden!!

Artist's Description

NOTE: FINE ART AMERICA WATERMARK WILL NOT APPEAR ON PURCHASED IMAGE.

The image of the beautiful Malay Lacewing Butterfly was captured at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland in September of 2010 with the Nikon D300 and the 70-300mm vr Nikon lens at 200mm. The leaves of the River Birch tree were taken as I sipped my coffee and waited for the humming birds on my back deck in Montgomery County, Maryland with the Nikon D300 and the 70-300mm vr Nikon lens. Images combined in Photoshop CS4 with much play and tinkering there as well as Adobe Camera Raw and Nikons NX2. My thanks to Leslie Nicole, Florabella and Flypaper for the great textures.

About Lois Bryan

Welcome! I"m a photographer and digital artist living in the Mid-Atlantic area of the US. Drawing and creating my own little sketchy worlds are some of my earliest memories. Life did what it does and the art fell away, but I reconnected when digital photography was introduced. I enjoy adding to my love of photography by tinkering with computer art programs including Photoshop, Corel Painter, Rebelle and others , though I do not use Ai / Artificial Intelligence. I also love working completely freehand with no photo reference involved. All of which is allowing me to circle back to a semblance of my days of sketching and painting traditionally. Please be aware that we are currently experiencing a glitch in our system. The images in...
