Discovered this handsome guy, a Little Blue Heron, posing for me beautifully on a bridge behind the magnificent Whalehead Club in Corolla, NC. Though mostly back-lit, not my favorite lighting, as I crept ever closer, his turn of the head illuminated his lovely plumage and glorious yellow eye. Slate blue body with a maroon-purple-ish neck and head ... he was a striking and very cooperative model. His take off and flight were in the direction of the reeds, so shots from that portion of the "shoot" are less than ideal, though the wing spread and definition in those amazing feathers is impressive!!!
Behind him is the beautiful blue "sound" area between the North Carolina Outer Banks and the mainland. As you can see, it was a lovely, sunny and calm day ... Hurricane Jose had finally departed and Hurricane Maria had not yet arrived.
Found along the Atlantic coast from Massachusetts to Florida, the Little Blue Heron is most often found along the Gulf of Mexico. He likes freshwater habitats such as ponds, lakes, marshes, swamps, and lagoons ... which were to my right as I stood on the bridge and which is where he was mostly staring as I crept close.

Thanks so much, Shelli ... I must have gotten a zillion shots off, as I crept up very slowly, stopped, snapped and snapped, then crept up again, stopped ... etc ... until I got closer. I love wildlife photography it's so challenging!!!! A real adventure!!!!
