Description
A tiny Downy Woodpecker rests on an old rotting tree limb on a sunny but cold winter afternoon. Gazing skyward, as many smaller birds frequently do, is for him a method of self-preservation. Not only do they have to be aware of danger from predators laterally, in the Downy's case snakes which even creep into their little nests, but from above as well by hawks and kestrels.
The Downy is the smaller cousin of the Hairy Woodpecker and can be coaxed to visit you at your feeder if you serve black oil sunflower seeds and suet cakes. They particularly seem to enjoy peanut suit cakes.
Image based on my own photographic image captured in January of 2009 with the Nikon D40x.
