A simple still life image of new blue iris flowers just pushing up from their bulbs. With all the snow and record-breaking cold temperatures some of us have been experiencing, I thought a flowering plain blue iris bulb would be fun to think about.
The process of getting bulbous flowers to bloom before their natural time, and indoors, is called forcing. The most popular plants for this purpose are Amaryllis, paperwhite narcissus, tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocus, Dutch iris and scilla.
It requires weeks of care of the bulb in order to establish a good strong root system. Each type has it's particular preference of soil, water and light. Some even need to be chilled, including the iris shown here. If the bulb is kept alive after blooming, again a careful process, it can be planted outside ... but it may take years before it regains sufficient strength to bloom again.
