Description
Betcha you don't see too many sights like this one, do ya?
At the end of the ski season at Blue Knob All Seasons Resort, in Claysburg, PA, a highly anticipated and hilarious ritual has been practiced for the past few years. A big hole is dug in the snow at the bottom of one of the slopes on about the last day the resort is open for skiing and boarding. The hole is filled with water, and at the appointed hour, those hearty dare-devils of the snow whoosh down the hill at the highest speed they can muster, in hopes that their trajectory and miles per hour will carry them across the pond. Whether on skis or snow-boards, it's a pret-tee cold ride if you don't make it ... or so I've been told.
Photograph taken with the Nikon D750 and the 18-200mm vr Nikkor lens on March 21, 2015.

So did this guy make it across??? You have a lot of fabulous images! Great work!
Lois Bryan replied:
I'd have to go back and take a look. I was snapping on rapid so what I have of all of these (and there are a couple hundred) are almost like videos, lol. By and large, the guys on snow boards had much better luck than the guys on skis. This guy is on a board.

Wow Lois, this is an amazing moment and captured. So clear and vivid. Looks like he is having a blast! Beautifully composed. L.
Lois Bryan replied:
Thanks, Emmy!!! Those kids ( I guess I shouldn't say kids .. there were some adults having a go as well! ) really, really had a blast ... nothing but good fun!!! Cold, but good fun!!! ; ))
Maria Hunt
Not sure how this "skimming" works in freezing weather without a wetsuit.. bless his heart. Sure engenders sympathy! Voted anyway. Warmest regards from the desert. F::L
Lois Bryan replied:
Thanks, Maria ... the idea is to get across the pond without falling in ... some do, some don't, lol!!! But it's held at the end of ski season and on the days I've attended, the air temperature is at least bearable. Sort of. Plus ... kids ... ya know? Whatcha gonna do?? Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the vote!!! Appreciated!!
Meg Shearer
Wonderful capture Lois! Wouldn't do it myself, but looks like fun to watch! L/F!
Lois Bryan replied:
:D Meg, I know ... it does look like fun, but there's no way I'd do it either. Fun to photograph, though!!! And hey, if you look just up over his head you can see the snap captured the bottom half of a snow ball. So not only do they have to navigate that water, they have to contend with snowballs coming at them, too!! LOL!!!
Kathi Mirto
Oh how fun that sounds. Would be great to watch! Great capture, Lois, love the deep blue and splashes!vf
Lois Bryan replied:
Oh, Kathi, it really is!!!!! It's held right after the "Beer Goddess Parade" so a lot of the kids in the pond skimming are still in costume ... I've got so many hilarious shots!!! Big, big fun!!!

Lois Bryan replied:
David .. me toooo!!! A couple of the shots I got, I got too close and got pretty wet, too, lol!!!
Iris Gelbart
Great Shot.......Do they sign release forms before.......L/F
Lois Bryan replied:
Hi Iris ... yes ... before you go skiing, you have to sign a release. It applies to any of the activities on the mountain. It's a standard form I've filled out at any of the ski places I've ever been.
Diane Schuster
oh my that makes me cold, I can hear the splash of that water! Great image, Lois l/f
Lois Bryan replied:
Thanks, Dee!!! Actually, by the time they do this it's usually not terribly cold ... but ... lol!!!!
