A quiet country road ... just behind us and to our right a herd of lovely black and white Holstein cows peacefully graze then amble over for a pet on their velvet snouts. But on this date in the year 1862 the gentle rolling countryside around Sharpsburg, Maryland erupted in death and horror. The Battle of Antietam ... or Sharpsburg ... was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Northern soil. It was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with about 23,000 casualties. In the current atmosphere of angst and controversy and anger, I encourage anyone and everyone to visit here ... alone. Walk around. Feel the presence of those who've gone before. Maybe it will put some things in perspective a little.

Life did what it does and the art fell away, but I reconnected when digital photography was introduced. I enjoy adding to my love of photography by tinkering with computer art programs including Photoshop, Corel Painter, Rebelle and others , though I do not use Ai / Artificial Intelligence. I also love working completely freehand with no photo reference involved. All of which is allowing me to circle back to a semblance of my days of sketching and painting traditionally. Please be aware that we are currently experiencing a glitch in our system. The images in...

Being from a pioneer West Virginia family, and staying there for six generations I can relate. So much history...my father's family for the North, my mother's for the South.. I so appreciate this beautiful view, your description and what this land can teach us if we listen. F/L

Love the contrast of dark clouds and sun illuminated foreground. It's so cool when that happens. Great capture Lois
Lois Bryan replied:
Thanks, Chris, it is cool when it happens. If i happen to be out and about with the camera, everything stops while I scurry around like a little mouse trying to get something interesting under that light!!!!!
