Description
Atop an old weathered side table in a corner of the room sits a glorious pink and mauve Thanksgiving cactus. Always known in my family as a Christmas cactus, I have, over the years, accumulated more than one of these guys. The original, from my mom who passed in the year 2000, is still going strong. But neither Mom's, nor any of my others, can seem to wait until Christmas to show off!
A little detective work gave me the answer. Technically known as the Schlumbergera truncata, my Thanksgiving Cacti (cactusses?) burst into happy and eager bloom weeks before their counterparts, the Christmas Cactus. That, and the shape of the leaves ... leaf segments, called “phylloclades,” are serrated or “toothed,” with pointy spines; with 2-4 on each side ... are the clues that finally identified my guys as the Thanksgiving variety.
Whatever they are, I'm thankful to have them ... and to have had the honor of enjoying them for so many years.
Image painted by hand, digitally, and influenced by and loosely based on my own original photo using Corel Painter 2019, a Wacom tablet, the art pen stylus and a variety of digital brushes.
Not created using Artificial Intelligence / AI.
Fine art purchases of this image will not include a watermark, and if I may make a recommendation ... it will look its very best on the fine art paper choice of "picture rag."

Wonderful digital hand painting and a gorgeous Thanksgiving cactus, mine only has two or three buds at present but in a couple more weeks will be doing it's part to brighten up the holiday season as your image is doing! LF
Lois Bryan replied:
Thanks Angela ... over on FB I added some snaps of each of my three. I think this one truly is a Thanksgiving cactus, the other two according to what I read and described here, must be Christmas guys. They are in bud stage, not blooming like crazy. So I think the mystery is solved!! 😁
