Description
"Vintage Venice" tied for second (or tied for third, however you look at the results, lol) in the Fine Art America contest "European Cities) August 12, 2015. My thanks to the host, Liran Eisenberg, and to all those who voted for my image. Congratulations to the tied first place winners (or first and second, again, however you look at it) Patrick Jacquet and Daniel Furon.
A view of the wonderful Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco, Venice Italy, as seen from the decks of a modern cruise ship.
The prominent, domed structure to the left is the magnificent Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. An interesting story regarding its structure concerns an unusually devastating outbreak of the plague in 1630. As a votive offering for the city's deliverance from the pestilence, the Republic of Venice vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance, Italian: Salute). The plague ended and the church was built. It is said that the plague ended in the autumn, when cooler temperatures may have played a role. The church was designed in the then fashionable baroque style by Baldassare Longhena, who studied under the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi. Construction began in 1631. Most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to the Black Death. My thanks to Wikipedia for some of the above information (and to our tour guide for the rest.)
A companion piece to "Bellissima Venezia."
Fine art purchases of this image will not include a watermark, and if I may make a recommendation ... this image will look its very best on the fine art paper choice of "picture rag."
