Description
Across a clear running waterway and over a gently curving wooden bridge stands the proud Whalehead Club. One of the Outer Banks' jewels, the magnificent art nouveau Whalehead was built in the 1920s by Edward Collings Knight, Jr. and is situated on the sound side of the peninsula.
Mr. Knight and his wife shared a love of waterfowl hunting, but in those days women weren't allowed to join the all-male hunting clubs. Mr. Knight's answer was to build his 21,000 square foot mansion, completed in 1925, just for his bride.
The home has had a varied history in addition to being the residence of the Knights. The Whalehead club served as residence and bunker in the early 1940s and during World War II for the US Coast Guard, the new branch of military service that had replaced the life saving service. Over the years, it also housed the Corolla School For Boys and a rocket fuel test site.
Purchased in 1992 by Currituck County it was restored and is now parklands and museum, open to the public.
Fine art purchases of this image will not include a watermark, and if I may make a recommendation ... this image will look its very best on the fine art paper choice of "picture rag."
