Backlit by the soft spring light, a pretty female red-bellied woodpecker perches in a leafless beech tree on an early April afternoon.

She and her mate are some of my favorite visitors to our bird feeder. They love suet cakes but always let the smaller birds have a taste, too. Here's what the Cornell Lab of Ornithology has to say about the Red Bellied Woodpecker:

"Red-bellied Woodpeckers are pale, medium-sized woodpeckers common in forests of the East. Their strikingly barred backs and gleaming red caps make them an unforgettable sight � just resist the temptation to call them Red-headed Woodpeckers, a somewhat rarer species that's mostly black on the back with big white wing patches. Learn the Red-bellied's rolling call and you�ll notice these birds everywhere."

Welcome! I"m a photographer and digital artist living in the Mid-Atlantic area of the US. Drawing and creating my own little sketchy worlds are some of my earliest memories. Life did what it does and the art fell away, but I reconnected when digital photography was introduced.
