"Can We Play Now" is the first place winner of the Fine Art America contest "Cute - Cuter - Cutest" sponsored by Sandra Hoefer, April 5th, 2015. Sincere thanks to Sandra and congratulations to the second and third place winners, J Havnein and John Willis.
A tiny Maltese puppy looks up at us hopefully, ready for a gentle romp and a play in the cool of the dewy spring grass.
Meet our little Buddy. "Can we play now?" is a perfect example of his usual attitude ... ready for fun!
Here's what the AKC (American Kennel Club) has to say about the breed:
The Maltese was once known as "Ye ancient dogge of Malta," for that is where they were first recognized and how they received their name. The breed has been an aristocrat of the canine world for over 28 centuries, owned by royalty all over the globe. Even as far back as the 1500's they were claimed to be sold for $2,000. And while other companion dogs such as the Pomeranian have been bred down from larger sizes, the first Maltese were the same size as the dogs we see today.
The AKC also describes the Maltese as: A toy dog covered from head to toe with a mantle of long, silky white hair, the Maltese is gentle-mannered and affectionate, known for being lively, playful and fearless despite its small size. Maltese are intelligent little dogs that are very fast learners if they feel sufficiently rewarded. Today, their refinement, cleanliness and portability make them a popular choice as a companion dog.
The image is a composite of two of my images, that of the puppy and that of the background, with a lovely texture from Distressed Jewel added.

I just lost my Maltese after 16 years. This looks exactly like her! How did you capture the personality so well?
Lois Bryan replied:
Oh Angela, honey, I'm so so sorry. Buddy is our second Maltese. My first, Peachie, was, as they say, my "heart" dog. I still miss her and it's been about 11 years. The photo this piece is based on was me talking to Buddy in a really high squeaky voice … and I may have used the word "treat" in there, which always gets his attention!!! Thanks so much for reaching out … and again, I'm so sorry.
