Description
Honored to announce that "Beallair In Bloom" won the Fine Art America "My Day" Contest 6/22/18. Many thanks to the contest administrator Chaim Segal and to everyone who voted for my image. Sincere congratulations to the other winners!!!
Among the most fascinating features of older homes, especially those that have been lived in for many generations, are the unique additions we sometimes find. These are structures that were created to satisfy the needs of the families in the distant past who called the house their home.
One of the ideas touted on the currently popular home make-over tv programs (I love them), include the unrelenting knock-down of interior walls and other structures. I wonder, though, if they got their hands on something more elaborate, like the fabulous, sprawling additions we see here, would these be made to go away, too? To me, they have a unique beauty all their own and help to tease the imagination and give a romantic sense of days gone by.
From the brick pavers lining the courtyard and its steps, the crenelated and scalloped roof lines, to the flower be-decked pergola against the warm stuccoed wall, you won't find architecture like this in the 21st century too often.
This image is very loosely based on a side view of the historic Beallair Mansion, once home of Lewis Washington, a nephew of George Washington. It is located near Harper's Ferry and Charles Town, West Virginia.
