Description
A majestic red-headed woodpecker clings to the trunk of an old willow tree on a sunny summer day in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of West Virginia. Where you see the sun falling on the feathers of his crimson head it's like looking at rubies.
After having observed them for a while, I wondered how they could tap so fiercely without hurting themselves. Turns out they have a very long tongue which they wrap around their brains to cushion them.
Digital art created in a watercolor style and loosely based on one of my own photographs.

Fine art purchases of this image will not include a watermark, and if I may make a recommendation ... this image will look its very best on the fine art paper choice of "picture rag."
